A Federal Election is Australia’s largest peacetime exercise. But Australians are cynical about voting, especially young people. Migrants can struggle to understand the process. Our task was to portray voting in a positive light, explain the process to minimise errors, and raise awareness of important rule changes that could disenfranchise first-time voters. We used the visual metaphor of a glowing light to represent each person’s precious vote, with thousands of executions in numerous channels and languages. The results surpassed all expectations, with 620,000 more enrolments and informal voting down from 5.2% to 4.0%. The campaign was used again in 2010 and 2013, a testament to its effectiveness.
